Olympic Day #8
Women’s 4 x 100 Relay: Franklin / Soni / Vollmer / Schmitt (USA — Gold)
Men’s 4 x 100 Relay: Grevers / Hansen / Phelps / Adrian (USA — Gold)
The beginning and the ending of an era. For the US this was more than just two races. Missy Franklin, hot off the heels of her success in the trials she comes to London and only fails to medal in one of her events. The better than advertised Missy made her country proud and stunned the world. Soni, Vollmer & Schmitt had also earned gold in their individual events with multiple broken world records between them and then they would come together and do it again.
Then you have Phelps his failure to medal in his first individual event came as a major shock. Then they had the upset in the 4x200 where the French took gold and the US took silver. But then Phelps would come back and wind up pulling the unheard of three-peat in his final two events. This was the end of a twelve year dominance in swimming and the end of the career for the most decorated Olympian of all time.
